The History of Pearls and Weddings

The History of Pearls and Weddings

Since ancient times, the pearl has been a symbol of unblemished perfection. It is the oldest known gem, and for centuries it was considered the most valuable. Pearls have been considered ideal wedding gifts because they symbolize purity and innocence.

In the Rigveda, an ancient Hindu book dating back to 1000 B.C. Krishna, the preserver, brought forth pearls from the depths of the sea to give to his daughter on her wedding day. Thus started the tradition of giving pearls to the bride.
The ancient Greeks also believed that pearls should be part of the wedding experience. They considered pearls to be the "wedding gem" because they believed that pearls would help ensure marital bliss and prevent newlywed brides from crying.
During the Crusades, gallant knights returning from the Holly Lands would bestow pearls to their "fair ladies" for their wedding days.
In the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, pearls were at the height of wedding fashion with royal weddings in the French House of Burgundy taking place in a "sea of pearls". Everyone from the bride to her male guests were adorned in glowing pearls.
From Queen Elizabeth I to our modern Queen Elizabeth II, the tradition of wearing pearls on the wedding day has continued. At the beginning of the 20th century, pearls were as much a nuptial gem in the United States as diamonds are today.
Today, the tradition of bestowing pearls upon the bride continues. Often the father of the bride or the groom gives the gift of pearls. Many brides give their bridesmaids pearl necklaces, bracelets or earrings too.

5 Wedding Dress Silhouettes and Fabrics for Plus-size Brides

5 Wedding Dress Silhouettes and Fabrics for Plus-size Brides
by Gallagher Flinn

Shopping for a plus-size wedding dress is rough. The standard size 10 sample dresses in bridal salons can be a pain (or impossible) to try on, and how can you know if a dress is going to look good before you see yourself in it? Before you resign yourself to a lackluster gown, consider this: The silhouette can mean everything for a dress. There are plenty of silhouettes that, when done right, flatter and complement a more curvaceous body. So don't worry about the size on the tag, and don't head straight for a rack of ball gowns big enough to swallow you up -- we've got five dress silhouettes and corresponding fabrics that work for your body type.

A - Line

It's hard to go wrong with an A-line gown. This silhouette is universally flattering. Elegant, clean lines flare at the hips to narrow and elongate the torso. A-line gowns are also quite versatile. Unlike some other silhouettes, which are dependent on the strength and texture of certain fabrics, the fabric your A-line gown is made from will depend on your personal preference. Want to keep a soft, feminine shape? Go for a light fabric like chiffon that can hang comfortably off the body. Something more refined and formal? Heavier fabrics like organza can add structure and help maintain the A-line's smooth, crisp silhouette.

Empire

A high-waisted empire gown is all about Old World romance. The waist on an empire gown rests just below the bust, then flares out and flows freely. This comfortable shape gives the empire gown a more relaxed charm than many other silhouettes -- without sacrificing style. One of the best things about empire gowns is that they can either enhance or de-emphasize the bust. While a sweetheart neckline on an empire dress will flaunt your assets, a square cut across the front can help play down larger breasts without looking dowdy. A free-flowing fabric like charmeuse in an empire silhouette can also hide a wider waists and hips, as well as make dancing and sitting much easier

Sheath

The plus-size fashion industry is all about hiding and disguising certain features, but there's no reason why you have to fall victim to that mentality. Choosing a wedding dress that shows off some wicked curves can be much better than trying to de-emphasize larger hips or breasts. Sheaths, which fit tightly against the body all the way from neckline to hem, can look fabulous on a plus-size bride (especially with the right body-shaping underwear). We're talking about the dresses Christina Hendricks wears on "Mad Men" -- unapologetically form-fitting and powerfully sexy.

Siren

We're not going to lie to you. Siren silhouettes (also called mermaid or trumpet) aren't for every body type. As a sleek, tight cut that flares at the knees, it's not usually recommended for plus-size brides. But that long line from the bust to the flare can look fantastic if you've got the height to pull it off. Just remember that the dress isn't built with shorter, more bottom-heavy women in mind -- it might end up feeling less like a dress than a sausage casing if you're an apple body type. The siren silhouette also needs a stiffer fabric like shantung that won't lose that sexy sweep from the hips to the hem.

Princess

Although it probably helps to know that the princess silhouette
stops at the waist and flares out from there, all you really need to know is that this is the dress Grace Kelly was married in. Appropriately, she also married a prince.

The benefit of the princess silhouette (besides being associated with the timeless elegance of Grace Kelly) is that it hides the hips, if only because no one can see where they are, and creates an hourglass effect when combined with a larger bust. However, for pear body types, the dress can get bottom-heavy. To avoid looking like you're slowly sinking into a giant marshmallow, balance the princess silhouette with straps that rest on the outside of the shoulders for symmetry, and use a light, airy fabric like chiffon for the train.

5 Figure-flattering Accessories for Plus-size Brides

5 Figure-flattering Accessories for Plus-size Brides
by Jessica Willis http://bit.ly/1IVrKfP
Dressing for your wedding can be intimidating, especially for a plus-size bride. But there are oodles of ideas and strategies that can help you accentuate your best features no matter what size you are. Contemporary fashion is all about helping women embrace their curves, and wedding season is no exception.
Especially in the bridal industry, vendors are taking a special interest in plus-size brides, helping them show off their fabulous figures on the most special day of their lives.
Feeling comfortable is the key when choosing your wedding attire, so let our list of top five accessories help you look and feel beautiful!
Lingerie
Well-constructed lingerie is the secret to making your figure look amazing under your wedding dress. If you're wearing a strapless gown, a corset will cinch in your waist and give you an hourglass figure that your groom will drool over. If you choose to wear a regular bra, make sure it fits correctly and is snug to your body.
You don't want your straps falling down or cutting into your shoulders. Check out longline bras for more coverage and support than regular bras -- most longline bras have removable straps so you can alter them according to the type of dress you have. Spanx are also a hot commodity for smoothing the tummy and thighs, making your figure look flawless.
And let's not forget your wedding night lingerie! There are plenty of companies that specialize in plus-size lingerie that will perfectly hug your curves. If you don't have luck at your favorite department store, go online for gorgeous nighties, negligees and bustiers made especially in your size.
Shoes
Choosing shoes to coordinate with your wedding gown can be tricky, but the right pair will work wonders! Overall, aim for a pump. Peep-toe pumps will elongate your legs more than other shoe styles can, and they show off that pedicure at the same time. Stick with a heel that isn't too thin or too thick -- a mid-range heel, about 3 or 3 -1/2 inches tall and 1/2 to 1 inch wide, will do more to streamline your figure.
Stay away from ankle straps and buckles, which will only make your legs appear shorter. Another trick to lengthen the leg is to wear a pointed-toe shoe as opposed to a round- or square-toe.
The tapered toe will make your legs seem to go on forever, which your guests will notice when your groom goes for the garter!
If you aren't into heels, opt for a flat shoe with embellishments. Not only might you be more comfortable, but you'll also have some great, attention-grabbing bling under your dress!
No matter whether you go for heels or flats, make sure your shoes fit correctly. If a shoe is too small, it's bound to be uncomfortable and make your feet look bigger than they really are.
Hair
Your hair is an accessory? Sure, it is! The right hairstyle on your wedding day can shed pounds off your look, making you glow and appear slimmer. Since there are many options out there, do your research to see what will fit your face shape the best. Tricia Parker from Aria Salon in Alpharetta, Ga., says, "If your face is round, it's best to create volume at the crown, elongating your face and making it look slimmer. Also, to create a longer neckline and torso, wear your hair off your neck."
Check out hairstyles of celebrities with a similar face shape to yours, or upload your picture to a makeover site to see how certain hairstyles actually look on you!
When deciding how you'll wear your hair, don't forget to take into consideration the style of your dress. If you're wearing a strapless gown with a beautiful neckline, you may want to wear your hair up to show off that part of your dress! For simple, breezier gowns, wavy hair that cascades down your back looks fresh and relaxed.
You can also wear headpieces to add a little bling to your 'do. Try a sparkly brooch, silk flower or crystal hair comb with matching earrings to accentuate your hairstyle.
Jewelry
Jewelry completes your look by bringing in a classic or daring element to your wedding wardrobe. There are a lot of options out there, but focus on pieces that draw attention to your best assets. If you have gorgeous eyes, wear earrings that make them pop! If you aren't so thrilled about your arms, you probably shouldn't wear that chunky bracelet you borrowed from your friend. And if you want people to look at your face and not your cleavage, don't wear a necklace with a long chain!
Bottom line: Try not to wear anything that's too dainty or too chunky. Any thin chains or tiny studs won't stand out, and heavy pieces are attention-grabbers. Also, stay away from chokers or tight-fitting necklaces, which will only look too small for your frame.
Wraps
If you're self-conscious about your shoulders or arms, plan on covering up with a wrap or a shawl. With so many elegant styles and luxurious fabrics to choose from, you'll be able to find one that perfectly accents your gown. Above and beyond the usual suspects, like silk and lace, you can have a wrap or bolero custom-made to match the beading on your dress, which will give you a cohesive look on your big day.
If you're going to be a winter wonderland bride, consider a beautiful cloak to bundle up with in the chilly weather. Ivory, white, soft gray and even different types of fur or faux fur all complement your bridal look. What's more, you'll stay warm! Be sure to take a few photographs styled with your wrap -- you'll look extremely elegant.
Whatever wrap you choose, be sure the piece fits you comfortably. It shouldn't be too big or too small. Oversized wraps will seem baggy, covering up too much of your body, and wraps that run on the small side will look too tight.
